The high temperatures were accompanied by a prolonged drought, forest fires, and a significant drop in the amount of water in rivers. Copernicus reported that summer river flows in Europe were the lowest in more than 30 years. For the twelve largest rivers on the continent, levels reached their lowest point since the start of records in 1992. seznamzpravy.cz ↗

Copernicus described summer 2026 as a period in which several climate extremes occurred at the same time. The combination of heat and drought increased the heat burden on the population and deepened the shortage of water in the country. Tagesspiegel ↗

Low river flows can complicate river transport and affect industries that depend on water availability. The impacts also extend to energy and trade. Copernicus data point to growing risks for water resources and the economy, which could increase if similar hot and dry summers recur. El Pais ↗
