EU wants to strengthen security and resilience against Putin
Videos
Von der Leyen emphasized the need for greater European independence and the capacity to respond to security, economic and industrial challenges. According to her, European policy must come to terms with dramatic changes in industry and the economy.
Brussels is also considering the creation of a European Security Council in cooperation with allies, as well as the introduction of its own security protocol. This proposal is linked to concerns that Europe has difficulty responding independently to a rapidly changing security environment.
The relationship with Russia and President Vladimir Putin is expected to be among the main decision-making topics in 2027. The Union will also have to contend with the influence of radical eurosceptic forces and decide how to combine security priorities with economic transformation.
The geopolitical perspective is increasingly reflected in the EU enlargement process as well. According to analyses, when it comes to Ukraine and Moldova, the Union is taking strategic interests into account more than in the past. Future developments will therefore affect not only the relationship with Russia, but also the ability of member states to advance a common security policy.
