Irish low-cost airline Ryanair changed its family seating rules from June 25 and is no longer charging parents a fee for the mandatory reservation of seats next to their children. The change comes after the UK Civil Aviation Authority launched an investigation into the practice of requiring adults to pay for guaranteed seating together with children. STVR (Spravy) ↗

Under the new policy, families can sit together at no extra cost if they use the free seats at the back of the aircraft. The rule applies mainly to passengers traveling with children under 14. Ryanair described the adjustment as a minor rule change and said it is thereby aligning its policy with industry standards. The company also claims the measure will be revenue-neutral and that families will still be able to take advantage of low ticket prices. hnonline.sk ↗

The decision followed pressure from regulatory authorities in the United Kingdom and Europe. Michael O'Leary criticized the British authorities, arguing that they are overlooking the practices of other airlines. The change concerns only the seat reservation itself for parents traveling with children, not other conditions of carriage. denik.cz ↗

The case illustrates the broader pressure regulators are placing on the fee policies of low-cost carriers. Further developments will depend on whether authorities also review similar rules at other airlines. El Pais ↗
