Pekarík bid farewell to the national team with a draw against Montenegro

The Slovak national football team drew 2:2 with Montenegro in Košice on Friday, June 5, 2026, in a friendly match. The duel also served as defender Peter Pekarík's farewell to the national team. The thirty-nine-year-old footballer made his 138th international appearance, equaling the Slovak record held by Marek Hamšík. SITA ↗

Pekarík led the team onto the pitch as captain. The ceremonial character of the match was further highlighted by the anthem, sung before the game by his wife Lujza. In the 22nd minute, he walked to the sideline, waved to the stands, and slowly left the pitch. For the experienced defender, it was his last match in the most prized jersey. sport.cz - hokej ↗

The Slovaks had an excellent start to the match. Róbert Boženík scored right at the beginning, but the team ultimately failed to hold on to the win. Ondrej Duda added the second Slovak goal. The match ended in a 2:2 draw, even though the home side both led and trailed during it. Dominik Surovčík got his chance in goal, marking his debut for the national team. sport.pravda.sk ↗

For coach Vladimír Weiss Sr., it was his second match since returning to the helm of the national team. Following the previous win over Malta, he had announced that other players would get an opportunity. The match against Montenegro thus brought not only the end of Peter Pekarík's international career but also further trials of options ahead of the national team's next fixtures. sport.sk ↗
