Jakub Menšík takes to the court today at Roland Garros for the semifinal against Alexander Zverev. The 20-year-old Czech tennis player is among the top four grand slam players for the first time in his career, and in Paris he is chasing a place in the final against the second seed and world number three from Germany. sport.sk ↗
Menšík reached the semifinal after beating Brazil's Joao Fonseca 6:4, 6:3, and 7:6. Before that, in the round of 16, he defeated eleventh seed Andrey Rublev of Russia, taking the decisive fifth set 6:3. That result already pushed his grand slam best, and his subsequent win over Fonseca surpassed it significantly. irozhlas.cz ↗
The Czech player also managed to overcome physically demanding moments in Paris. After a five-set match in the second round against Argentina's Mariano Navone, he remained lying on the court with cramps and left the venue in a wheelchair. According to new information, however, he has since recovered physically ahead of the semifinal to a state that allows him to continue at the tournament of his life. At the same time, his coaching team points out that against Zverev it will be crucial to seize the chance and build on the improvement shown in his previous matches. irozhlas.cz ↗
Zverev is in a different position than Menšík, as this is already his eleventh grand slam semifinal. In the quarterfinal, after early trouble, he beat Spain's Rafael Jódar in three sets. The Paris tournament thus offers a contest between an experienced favorite still waiting for his first grand slam title and a Czech player experiencing the biggest tournament of his career. isport.cz ↗
