Ukraine

What is happening there and why it matters.

So it makes sense

Ukraine has been at war since February 2022 and that determines everything else — from how the country is governed to whether elections are held at all. It is also the single largest news topic on this site: roughly fifty reports a day, which is why this section uses a shorter window than other countries and groups reports into events. Recurring themes beyond the front line: the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, where the IAEA has repeatedly asked for a ceasefire to repair power lines, and energy supply before winter — according to Polish minister Sikorski, Putin is betting that a harsh winter will break Ukrainians.

Who governs
The president is Volodymyr Zelensky. In August 2026 he put forward proposals to end the war, including a ceasefire and a plan for the Donbas, but Putin says the peace talks are stalling and Russia is weighing escalation, including missile strikes on central Kyiv.
Who opposes
Conventional opposition does not function under martial law: Zelensky refuses to hold elections during the war, warning they would split the country like a "tsunami". The strongest critical voice is therefore former commander-in-chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi, who said in August 2026 that "something went wrong" and that the country faces "another five years in the desert".
Next election
No elections are held under martial law — the president rules them out until the war ends.

mentions of the country in media of surrounding states
