Norway
What is happening there and why it matters.
So it makes sense
Norway is not in the European Union but is its most important gas supplier — since the cut-off from Russian deliveries it keeps the continent heated. It is also the country that manages the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund through its oil revenues, while working out what to do about the border behind which lies Russia.
- Who governs
- The prime minister is Jonas Gahr Støre. The country is going through a change on the throne: after the death of King Harald V his son Haakon succeeded him, and his wife Mette-Marit became queen. Ahead of the state funeral Norway temporarily reinstated border controls.
- Who opposes
- Norwegian politics is coalition-based, without a single dominant opposition force; the arguments are more about the oil fund, taxes, and how far to go in confronting Moscow. A sharp test was the seizure of a Russian research vessel near Svalbard, after which Russia summoned the Norwegian ambassador.
- Next election
- Parliamentary elections are held every four years, next in 2029.
