Greece

What is happening there and why it matters.

So it makes sense

Greece is a holiday destination, but also a country on the Union’s sharpest border twice over. A migration route runs through it in the south — arrivals on Crete rose by half in 2026 — and in the east it has a tense relationship with Turkey: Turkish drones violate Greek airspace and Athens scrambles F-16s against them. On top of that come wildfires every summer, in 2026 including fatal ones on the island of Salamis. Greece has also moved a Patriot air-defence system to Crete as tension around Iran grows.

Who governs
The prime minister is Kyriakos Mitsotakis. His government pushed through a social media ban for under-15s and extraordinary financial support for pensioners and families with children, and promises to be uncompromising on migration. The prime minister also thanked Christopher Nolan for the film Odyssey promoting the country.
Who opposes
The government faces an agricultural subsidies scandal, which is the opposition’s main lever — because of it Mitsotakis publicly ruled out an early election in July 2026. Whether the affair holds until the regular date is currently the main line of Greek domestic politics.
Next election
The next parliamentary election is expected in 2027.

  • Storms on Kréta continue for a third day; floods hit Ierapetra, Anogeia and Rethymno — The 112 emergency service is sending warnings to residents; farmers and shepherds on rural roads in Anogeia are having trouble with access.
