Indian captain Smit Machchhar described for the first time the co-pilot's attack during Wednesday's Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. According to available information, the aircraft carrying 174 passengers sharply entered a descent after the co-pilot attacked the captain with a knife in the cockpit and seriously injured him. Despite his injuries, Machchhar understood that the plane was losing altitude. While lying on the cockpit floor, he decided to get up and open the door. This allowed passengers or crew members to enter the cockpit and help stop the dangerous course of the flight. The aircraft was subsequently diverted for an emergency landing. BBC News ↗
"I cannot let them die," the pilot said during a video call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the conversation, he described how he first fought for his own life while at the same time remaining aware of his responsibility for the people on board. Modi expressed his appreciation for the pilot's courage and called him a hero. TVN24.pl ↗
Machchhar is currently recovering in a hospital in Abu Dhabi. His condition is stable, although he suffered serious injuries in the attack. The case is being investigated by authorities in several countries. Questions remain open regarding the co-pilot's motive, the course of the attack, and whether he had any accomplices. Merkur ↗
