Sudeten German Congress in Brno for the First Time in the Czech Republic, Söder Speaks of a Historic Signal

The 76th Sudeten German Congress is being held in the Czech Republic for the first time in its history. The event took place at the Brno Exhibition Centre as part of the Pentecost celebrations and, according to participants, represents a gesture of rapprochement between Germans and Czechs following the expulsion of the Sudeten Germans. denik.cz ↗ denik.cz ↗

Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder attended the congress and described it as a "great peace festival" and a "historic signal." In his speech, Söder emphasized the symbolic value of holding the congress on Czech territory for the first time. The head of the Sudeten German Homeland Association, Bernd Posselt, assured participants that the Sudeten Germans had come to Brno with a mission of love, not hatred. Posselt also thanked Czech friends, which prompted a standing ovation from those present. seznamzpravy.cz ↗ Deutschlandfunk ↗

However, the event was not without controversy in the Czech Republic. Opponents of the congress expressed their disagreement through protests held in the center of Brno, with the largest demonstration planned for Sunday afternoon. The Prague government did not take part in the congress. This polarization reflects the still-persistent sensitivity surrounding the topic of the Sudeten German expulsion and relations between the Czech Republic and Germany. Nevertheless, supporters of the congress see its being held in the Czech Republic as an important step toward understanding and reconciliation between the two nations. Tagesspiegel ↗
