North Korea Fires Ballistic Missiles Following Military Exercise
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff detected the launches at around 5:20 a.m. local time from the area of the port city of Wonsan on North Korea's east coast. According to available data, the missiles traveled a distance of approximately 250 kilometers. The South Korean military initially reported the launch of an unidentified object; reports later said it involved several short-range ballistic missiles. seznamzpravy.cz ↗
The missile launches followed maneuvers called Freedom Edge, in which the armed forces of South Korea, the United States and Japan took part. North Korea has long viewed such exercises as rehearsals for a military attack and regularly responds to them by demonstrating its missile capabilities. El Mundo ↗
South Korean authorities provided no further details about the launch. It is not known whether the missiles landed in the intended area or whether the incident caused any damage or injuries. The United States, meanwhile, maintains that relations between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un remain good.
The latest launch has once again heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula. South Korea, the United States and Japan are likely continuing to evaluate technical data on the missiles and coordinate their next response.
