Putin held phone call with Stubb and Støre on the war in Ukraine
Videos
According to available statements, Stubb and Støre emphasized the need to ease tensions and to continue supporting Ukraine. However, the contacts were not coordinated in advance with all European partners. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen therefore criticized the approach of the neighboring countries and stated that the European Union should act in a unified manner in negotiations concerning Ukraine. The phone call also drew attention due to differing accounts of how it unfolded. The British newspaper Financial Times reported that Putin devoted a significant part of the conversation to explaining the history of the Slavs and events since 2014. Støre rejected these claims and stated that the Russian president spoke mainly about historical events. The newspaper subsequently refused to correct the article. SITA ↗
According to statements from Moscow, this was the first direct contact between Putin and Western leaders after a longer period. The Kremlin also suggested that European representatives are trying to get involved in diplomatic negotiations about the war. The phone call itself has not yet produced an agreement on a ceasefire or a concrete plan for further negotiations. Its significance will depend on whether it is followed by coordinated steps from European countries and further contacts with Moscow. Tagesspiegel ↗
