Poland to introduce windfall tax on fuel companies' excess profits

Polish President Karol Nawrocki signed a law introducing a tax on excess profits of oil and fuel companies. The measure is expected to reduce the price of petrol and diesel in Poland from Saturday, October 3, by approximately 1.2 to 1.3 zloty per liter, or about 27 to 30 cents. kultura.pravda.sk ↗

The law was created as a government response to high fuel prices. The president signed it, but at the same time asked the Constitutional Tribunal to review its compliance with the constitution. The expected price decrease is to apply to petrol stations across the entire country. Tagesspiegel ↗

Before signing, Nawrocki claimed that Prime Minister Donald Tusk was trying to force him to approve the law. The president also expressed doubts about its form. Nevertheless, he ultimately signed the legislation. TVN24.pl ↗

The government office announced that the price reduction is to take effect immediately. Jan Grabiec stated that the government would implement it within the next few hours. Andrzej Domański also joined the discussion about the timing of the measure. TVN24.pl ↗

The new tax is meant to hit the profits of fuel companies and create room for lower petrol and diesel prices. Its practical impact will depend on how companies pass on the costs to prices and how the Constitutional Tribunal assesses the adopted law. Spiegel.de ↗
