What Europe Is Writing About: US Launches Financial War Against Iran, Burnham in Kyiv, Glucksmann Sets Sights on the Élysée

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the start of what he himself called the most extensive financial operation against a single country, and the White House promised full-throttle economic war against Iran. Tehran said that if Washington does not relent, not a drop of oil will leave the Persian Gulf. In Kyiv, Ukraine marked 35 years of independence in the presence of British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who announced British support for assembling long-range missiles on Ukrainian territory. And in France, the dispute on the left deepened: Raphaël Glucksmann announced he would run for president through primaries organized with the Socialists and distanced himself from Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

An overview from 37 countries over the past twenty hours.

🔍 What was mentioned in this window in only one place

Three things that were barely mentioned in major European newsrooms, though they should have been.

Albania is on the 85th day of uninterrupted protests. The demands have meanwhile shifted from Rama’s resignation to calls for his arrest as well as the arrest of Sali Berisha; at the same time, the twenty-fourth day of protest against the territorial reform in Divjake is under way. This is a European Union candidate country, and in our window only two Albanian newsrooms wrote about it. It should be added that both are domestic and have their own political leaning, so the picture is necessarily incomplete.

Pan-European rules on product repair came into force today and were noted by only one newsroom in the entire window, Ireland’s RTÉ. Switzerland’s NZZ, meanwhile, describes the other side of the same coin: airline Swiss is warning of long waits during the autumn holidays because of the Union’s new entry-exit system. Two regulatory changes that people will feel in their wallets and at the airport.

Russia bought petrol in Turkey for the first time. The country with the largest refining complex in the region is importing fuel, and the first shipment is due to arrive by the end of the month. Ukrainian media read it as a consequence of their own strikes on refineries, Hungarian media as an energy story. The Russian fuel crisis itself is well mapped in Central Europe — what is new is the Turkish branch.

How this summary was produced

The overview is based on press monitoring in 37 European countries over twenty hours from Sunday morning to the early hours of Monday. The selection included 7,894 articles, of which only a fraction is represented here. The criteria were politics, geopolitics, economics with an impact on public policy, and major extraordinary events; we omitted sport, weather, recipes and minor local items.

Each link leads directly to the original article in the language of the given media outlet. We translated the headlines into Slovak, while leaving the names of people, parties and institutions in their original form.
