Meloni announces limit on foreign students in classrooms

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced upcoming measures intended to limit the number of foreign-origin students in individual classes and ban the wearing of burqas and niqabs in schools. She announced this at the Fenix event, organized by the youth organization of the Brothers of Italy (FdI) party. hnonline.sk ↗

The proposal is to be submitted to the Council of Ministers. Part of the measure is to be a legally set maximum number of students of foreign origin per class. The Italian government also plans to introduce an obligation for parents of foreign-origin students who have serious difficulties integrating into the school environment to learn Italian. ANSA ↗

Meloni linked the planned changes to the question of integration in schools. According to her, the measures are meant to respond to situations where a high proportion of foreign-origin students complicates teaching or the integration of children into the group.

The president of the national association of school principals, Antonello Giannelli, called the idea of a limit justified and acceptable from a didactic standpoint, while also pointing out the difficulty of its practical implementation. He noted the problem faced by schools in neighborhoods where foreigners make up the majority of the population. La Repubblica ↗

Further details of the proposal, including the exact number of students allowed per class and a timetable, have not yet been announced. The measures are to be decided by the Italian government in the Council of Ministers.
