English built on an impressive performance from the semi-final, where he set a new championship record with a time of 1:43.49 minutes. He thus broke a 48-year-old maximum held by German runner Olaf Beyer. The Irish representative, who already had two bronze medals from European championships, confirmed his form in the decisive race as well. sport.sk ↗

The final had a slower pace, which affected the tactics of several competitors. Attaoui, who was one of the gold medal favorites after his silver from Rome, finished third this time. Spaniard David Barroso took fourth place and Italian Francesco Pernici finished fifth. Brit Max Burgin, who had previously advanced to the final, had to withdraw before the decisive race. El Pais ↗

English's triumph capped off his successful performance in Birmingham and simultaneously rewrote the historic records of the championship. After the semi-final record and final victory, he was ranked among the leading figures of the European championship in middle distances.
