Israel is marking the third anniversary of the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023 on Wednesday, in which Palestinian militants and their allies killed approximately 1,200 people. The attack, which began with a massive rocket barrage and incursions across the border at more than 60 locations, subsequently triggered the war in the Gaza Strip. teraz.sk ↗
Memorial events for the victims of the massacre, including participants of the Nova music festival, are being held in southern Israel. The country is marking the anniversary at a time when former hostages are still coming to terms with the consequences of their captivity. Some returned after a few weeks, others only after more than a year. STVR (Minúta po minúte) ↗
On the day of the anniversary, Israel also carried out new strikes on the Gaza Strip. Palestinian officials reportedly reported two casualties. Loud explosions were also heard from the places where the festival attacked by militants took place three years ago. svet.sme.sk ↗
The Israeli army stated that it has hit approximately 100,000 targets since the Hamas attack. The conflict has also deepened the humanitarian and social crisis in Gaza as well as internal traumas in Israel. Tagesspiegel ↗
On the occasion of the anniversary, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reaffirmed support for Israel and warned against rising antisemitism in Germany. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot visited Israel to honor the victims of the attack. Developments in Gaza and the security situation in the region remain the subject of further international efforts. STVR (Minúta po minúte) ↗
