Feijóo toughened his stance on migration in Catalonia

Leader of Spain's People's Party Alberto Núñez Feijóo unveiled his vision of orderly migration policy in Badalona on Sunday and pledged that Spain would close its borders to people who do not want to work or who break the law. His appearance took place as part of the campaign ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Feijóo reiterated his proposal to review the rules for granting and revoking Spanish citizenship. He also once again criticized Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in connection with the crisis in Ceuta. Before more than 6,000 people in Badalona, he warned that Catalonia would decide the political change in the country. El Pais ↗

The leader of the People's Party said he wants to close the borders "with a firm lock" to migrants who do not come to work or who want to evade the law. He also spoke of the need for a "complete cleanup of Spain," by which he meant the political change that, according to him, Catalonia could bring about. El Mundo ↗

On the same day, Sánchez visited the Fiesta de la Rosa event in Gavà, organized by the Socialist Party. The town is one of the important electoral strongholds of the Catalan socialists. In Badalona, Feijóo is trying to limit the growth in support for the Vox party and strengthen the position of the People's Party. El Pais ↗

Both appearances showed that Catalonia is becoming an important arena of pre-election rivalry between the socialists and the People's Party. Migration, security and the future direction of Spanish politics remain the main themes.
