The European Union and Canada are deepening their mutual relations at the Montreal summit despite differing positions among EU member states. The meeting, attended on Thursday and Friday by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, is taking place at a time of heightened uncertainty in international politics.
Von der Leyen and Carney supported the idea that Canada could become an associate member of the European Union. However, the proposal faces clear reservations from Germany. Available information does not indicate that the summit participants reached a final agreement on this issue. Le Monde ↗
The EU and Canada also agreed on several intentions for further cooperation. According to assessments of the talks, the policy of US President Donald Trump is also driving them toward closer partnership. Both sides are seeking ways to reduce dependence on individual partners while avoiding escalating tensions with either the United States or China. Tagesspiegel ↗
The Canadian prime minister emphasized the importance of mutually complementary capacities for strengthening sovereignty. The partnership is therefore meant to include broader coordination in areas that can increase the resilience of both sides. Further developments will depend on specific agreements and on the stance of EU member states toward Canada's potential associate membership. Politico Europe ↗
