The joint debt of the European Union is growing rapidly and could reach one trillion euros by the end of 2027. This is according to a report by the European Court of Auditors, which warns that rising debt servicing costs could complicate the EU budget in the future. idnes.cz ↗

According to the auditors, the Union's indebtedness has more than tripled over the course of several years. In 2025, the joint debt was more than four times higher than the debt of Czech government institutions, which amounted to approximately 3.8 trillion Czech crowns. seznamzpravy.cz ↗

The growth in debt is driven mainly by the financing of the program to revive economies after the COVID-19 pandemic and the support of investments. The European Union created joint financial commitments for these purposes, the repayment of which will burden future budgets.

The auditors warn that a higher volume of debt may limit the scope for financing other policies and programs. Budget planning will also become more sensitive to the development of interest rates and the overall costs associated with repaying obligations. ekonomika.sme.sk ↗

The expected growth in debt puts pressure on member states and the European Commission to take into account the long-term sustainability of joint financing in further decision-making. If the current trend does not change, the one trillion euro threshold could be reached as early as 2027.
