Die Linke rejects proposal for coalition with the Greens and SPD

Die Linke leader Ines Schwerdtner rejected ideas of forming a nationwide coalition of the Greens, SPD and Die Linke. She was responding to a proposal by Green parliamentary group leader Dröge, who described such cooperation as an option for federal politics. Tagesspiegel ↗

Dröge said the three-party left-wing alliance could push through several measures in social policy and climate protection. In her view, the parties could also agree on questions of fairer taxation. She also pointed to the existence of broad public support for these topics. Deutschlandfunk ↗

Schwerdtner, however, rejected the proposal, saying Die Linke would not serve as a tool for other parties to win a majority. In her view, this is not a genuine offer of political cooperation but a power tactic. The party, she said, therefore is not available for such political games. Die Zeit ↗

The latest exchange concerns possible cooperation at federal level and follows a broader debate about relations between Die Linke, the Greens and the Social Democrats. The statements so far do not indicate that formal negotiations on forming such a government have begun.

Further developments will depend on whether the parties can find common ground on social policy, climate measures and tax issues. Die Linke, however, has signaled with its reaction that it conditions any possible cooperation on a concrete political offer.
