Hungary: investigation into failures at Paks and review of critical energy systems

On 3 September 2026 the government in Budapest ordered two extraordinary investigations. Ministers must submit a report by 11 September on what led to the critical situation at the Paks nuclear plant and whether risks from earlier low-water periods were reported to decision-makers. A risk analysis of the entire critical energy infrastructure is due by 31 October. We are tracking what actually comes of it, and in parallel the fate of the Slovak contract to refurbish the Gabcikovo turbines.
