Poland

What is happening there and why it matters.

So it makes sense

Poland is central Europe’s largest economy and a country whose politics is shaped above all by geography: it borders Ukraine, Belarus and Russia’s Kaliningrad, so defence and the Russian threat are not an abstract topic there but a budget line and a daily news item. It is also deeply divided — the fight over the courts, the media and the role of the church has dragged on for years and did not end with the change of government.

Who governs
The prime minister is Donald Tusk, who leads a pro-Western coalition. The president, however, is Karol Nawrocki, elected from the opposition right — Poland therefore lives in cohabitation, where the head of state genuinely obstructs the government. It showed most recently when the president blocked a government bill against quack medicine and tabled his own. Without the president’s signature the government cannot pass a major reform, which is the key to almost every Polish domestic story.
Who opposes
The main opposition force is Jarosław Kaczyński’s Law and Justice (PiS), which governed until 2023 and has an ally in President Nawrocki. Further right sits the Confederation. Polls suggest Poles blame both sides of the dispute — the president and the government alike — for unkept promises.
Next election
The next parliamentary election is expected in 2027.
