Hungary
What is happening there and why it matters.
So it makes sense
Hungary has just been through its biggest political change in sixteen years, and most news from there is about what follows — from the rebuilding of public service media to fights over the constitution. Two themes are permanent regardless of who governs: the Paks nuclear plant, which covers a substantial share of Hungarian electricity and whose outages are a national event, and the Danube, whose low water in dry years threatens even the cooling of that plant.
- Who governs
- The prime minister is Péter Magyar, whose Tisza party won the election on 12 April 2026 with a 71 % constitutional majority. Since 19 August 2026 the president has been judge András Baka — the man Orbán’s government removed as head of the Supreme Court in 2011. He replaced the ousted Tamás Sulyok, and did so through the same one-off constitutional amendment mechanism that Baka himself once called a breach of the rule of law. The government has declared that it regards Russia as a threat.
- Who opposes
- After sixteen years in power Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz is in opposition, having conceded defeat on election night. The party has faced an existential crisis since — some inside it even discuss dissolving it. Its constitutional court challenges against Sulyok’s removal also failed.
- Next election
- The election was on 12 April 2026; the next is due in 2030.
