Swedish court convicts two men over concealed Viking-era treasure, acquits third man accused of selling it

The Jönköping District Court convicted two men on October 7 of a serious violation of the cultural heritage protection act in connection with a unique silver hoard from the Viking Age. They received suspended sentences and day-fines. A third man, whom the prosecutor had accused of attempting to sell the hoard, was acquitted by the court. SVT ↗

The hoard was found in the summer of 2018 by two friends using a metal detector in a field near the church in Ölmstad, north of Huskvarna. According to the indictment, both of them then concealed the hoard for years. Sejfer ↗

It was handed over to the county administrative board (Länsstyrelsen) in November 2024 through an anonymous intermediary. A photograph of the hoard that one of the men sent to the authority included, at the bottom of the image, an envelope bearing his name and address, which, according to Sejfer, helped identify the finders. The hoard is estimated to date from roughly 800 to 1050 and consists of silver objects and coins. According to Sejfer, it is currently on display at a museum in Jönköping. The prosecutor sought prison sentences of 8 to 14 months for the finders and 6 months for the third man. Sejfer ↗
