Plane crash in the Bahamas kills ten people. The accident coincided with a fire on another aircraft from the same company
A small Cessna 402 belonging to Flamingo Air crashed into bushes on Friday shortly after takeoff from the Bahamian capital, Nassau, before it could land on the island of Andros. All ten people on board died — nine passengers and the pilot. The accident occurred on the exact 53rd anniversary of the country's independence from Great Britain, which Prime Minister Philip Davis described as turning the holiday into a "day of mourning."BBC ↗
The plane was headed from Lynden Pindling International Airport near Nassau to the small San Andros airport when, according to the Bahamian air accident investigation authority, it "reportedly encountered problems" and crashed into brush before landing. Prime Minister Davis initially spoke of one survivor, but several hours later confirmed that this person had also succumbed to their injuries.BBC ↗
The Bahamian public broadcaster ZNS Network aired a brief news report that same day directly from the scene of the tragedy on the island of Andros.
That same day, Flamingo Air also recorded a second safety incident — another one of its planes returned to the airport in Nassau after a reported malfunction, and as soon as the passengers disembarked, a fire broke out on board. The Bahamian Ministry of Aviation therefore temporarily suspended the company's operating license as a "precautionary safety measure," stating that it was not a sanction. Local authorities are now investigating the cause of Friday's tragedy; the names and ages of the victims have not yet been released.NOS ↗
