Fifty Years Since the Scandal That Forced MPs to Speak of "Destroyers of Civilization". ICA Prepares TG50

London's ICA gallery will host an event marking the fiftieth anniversary of the Prostitution exhibition by the band Throbbing Gristle. The event, named TG50, will take place on October 18, exactly five decades after their controversial concert in this venue. The Quietus ↗

The performance then sparked a storm in the tabloid press and conservative MP Nicholas Fairbairn declared the band members "destroyers of civilization" in parliament. The event will offer film projections, discussions and music. Part of the day will be freely accessible, with tickets available for projections and discussion. In a discussion, Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti from the band will sit down for a conversation with Luke Turner from The Quietus. The Quietus ↗

TG50 will also be the moment when a new line of Throbbing Gristle merchandise is launched; some pieces will be available exclusively at this event. An extensive collection containing thirty-six concert performances by the band, newly remastered and restored by Chris Carter, is being released. It will be released on December 4 and will be fully introduced on the day TG50 takes place. The Quietus ↗

Almost simultaneously came the news that they have completed a feature-length documentary about the life and work of Cosey Fanni Tutti titled Art Sex Music. The film is directed by Caroline Catz, produced by Andy Starke and is based on her memoirs from 2017, which bore the same title. The release date has not yet been announced. The Quietus ↗

The film follows her childhood in Hull, early work in the group COUM Transmissions and in Throbbing Gristle as well as her later solo work and collaboration with partner Chris Carter. The story is told through personal archives — decades of diaries, costumes, photographs and artwork. Special attention is given to how the artist used her own experience from the sex industry in her work and challenged the conservative views of the seventies about sexuality and identity. Catz previously wrote, directed and acted in another music film — the 2021 feature Delia Derbyshire: The Myths And The Legendary Tapes. The Quietus ↗

Throbbing Gristle are considered the founders of industrial music and their influence on subsequent noise, EBM and techno is hardly overestimable.
