Alabama Shakes Return After 11 Years. Behind New Album Stands Benefit Concert for Brewery
Videos
Alabama Shakes released the album I Must Be Dreaming – their first in more than eleven years. The trio of Brittany Howard, Heath Fogg and Zac Cockrell released it on August 28 through Island Records; it was produced by Shawn Everett together with the band and recorded in Nashville's Sound Emporium and Blackbird studios. "I want people to know that they can rely on one another," Howard sums up what the album is about. The group from Athens, Alabama last traveled this path in 2015, when their second album Sound & Color went straight to number one on the Billboard 200 and won three Grammy Awards, including Best Alternative Album. After two years of touring, a break came in 2018, and Howard embarked on a solo career. Rolling Stone France ↗
It is also the band's first album in a three-member lineup. The group narrowed to three because their original drummer Steve Johnson, following legal problems, is no longer a member; charges filed against him in 2021 were dismissed by court at the end of that same year. Wikipedia ↗
The return happened by chance. At the end of 2024, Howard was asked whether she would perform at a benefit concert for Druid City Brewing Company, a brewery in Tuscaloosa that was struggling to survive after the pandemic. The owner is her friend and she has a connection to the city – it was among the first places where Alabama Shakes performed. She agreed to the December benefit concert at Bama Theatre. "And that's when it occurred to me: I should call the guys," she says. "It was supposed to be just a small secret show. But we had to meet up and rehearse old songs we hadn't played in ages – and it was really great." Rolling Stone France ↗
The album's eleven tracks shouldn't surprise longtime fans: the blues, soul, folk and Americana that shaped the band's sound remained in place. The title also has two sides. "There's this feeling: this must be a dream. But there's also another side – you can still find something beautiful and joyful, despite everything we're taking in," Howard explains. "As scary as it sounds, both sides of this stone exist." Rolling Stone France ↗
The band formed in 2009 and their debut Boys & Girls brought them the hit Hold On three years later – a song through which most listeners came to know the band. SuperMusic.cz has also added text for the new single I Feel Hope Coming. Wikipedia ↗
