Italy cancels Kanye West's concerts, Netherlands lets him in

Italian authorities canceled the planned July concerts of Kanye West, also known as Ye, and Travis Scott. The performances were scheduled to take place on July 17 and 18, and the decision was made due to concerns about public safety and public order. startitup.sk ↗

The authorities pointed to the short time gap between the concerts and the expected high number of attendees. In West's case, his controversial past also plays a role, including antisemitic statements, swastikas on t-shirts, and expressions of admiration for Nazism and Adolf Hitler. Travis Scott faced criticism over security measures following the tragedy at the Astroworld festival in Houston in 2021, where ten people died in a crowd crush. Der Standard ↗

Italy's decision follows a broader European trend. West has already faced bans or rejections of performances in France, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Poland. Italy thus joined the countries that, in the context of his European tour, have prioritized security and social risks over allowing the concert to take place. teraz.sk ↗

The Netherlands took a different stance. The Minister for Asylum and Migration, Bart Van Den Brink, stated that there is no legal reason to deny West entry into the country. Despite protests and calls from members of parliament, the rapper is thus set to perform in Arnhem in early June. Further developments in his European tour will depend on the decisions of individual states and local security authorities. svet.sme.sk ↗
