Šutaj Eštok on Cameras: Two Workers Lost Their Positions

Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok announced on Sunday that two Interior Ministry employees who handled the purchase of traffic radar cameras are no longer in their positions. This is a response to the case of a test operation of two cameras in which Russian-made components were discovered. tnlive.sk (Markíza) ↗

Šutaj Eštok stated that the ministry held the employees personally responsible for the cameras. At the same time, he rejected his own personal responsibility and claimed that the ministry was deceived by the supplier. According to his statements, the Russian cameras did not arrive in Slovakia as a proper system and the problem concerned only the test operation. Novy Cas ↗

The Interior Ministry is therefore preparing a new public procurement for a system of road cameras. The minister said the tender should be launched in the coming weeks. A security project, which was not prepared during the test operation of the two cameras, should also be part of the new procedure. SITA ↗

The case became part of political discussion also because it concerns sensitive infrastructure and security risks. Šutaj Eštok also stated in political programs that Slovakia is a hub for operations of many secret services, but does not believe that Russia poses an immediate threat to Slovakia. KDH Chairman Milan Majerský responded critically to these statements. interez.sk ↗

Further developments will depend on the new procurement and whether the ministry will present details of the security project. The ministry will also have to explain the control mechanisms that are to prevent a similar problem from recurring.
