NATO shoots down drone in Lithuanian airspace

NATO fighter jets shot down a drone that violated Lithuania's airspace overnight on Tuesday. The incident was reported by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauséda. The unmanned aircraft appeared near Vilnius, and alliance jets responding to the alert destroyed it. ta3.com ↗

Nauséda thanked the allied forces for their rapid response. However, neither the president nor the Lithuanian authorities have yet officially specified the origin of the drone. Lithuanian media reported that the unmanned aircraft probably flew in from Belarus, which is a close ally of Russia. forum24.cz ↗

Some civilian flights were briefly delayed in connection with the intervention. Poland also preemptively sent additional aircraft into the air. Details about the type of drone, its purpose, or the circumstances under which it entered Lithuanian airspace have not yet been released. hnonline.sk ↗

Lithuania borders Belarus and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. Both areas lie close to NATO territory, which heightens the sensitivity of every airspace violation. Further steps will depend on the investigation, which is meant to clarify the drone's origin and the reason for its flight over Lithuania. kultura.pravda.sk ↗
