Jakub Menšík has advanced to the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in his career at Roland Garros. After a round-of-16 win over 11th seed Andrey Rublev of Russia, he defeated Brazilian João Fonseca 6:4, 6:3 and 7:6 in the quarterfinals. irozhlas.cz ↗
The Czech tennis player had earlier come through a demanding match against Rublev, which he closed out with a 6:3 win in the fifth set. That win carried him into the tournament's last eight and extended his best-ever Grand Slam result. Menšík then handled the following duel with Fonseca — who had previously eliminated Casper Ruud and also drew attention in the tournament with a win over Novak Djokovic — without dropping a set. irozhlas.cz ↗
Menšík's performance also drew attention because, after a five-set match in the second round, he was left lying on the court with cramps and had to leave the grounds in a wheelchair. In the quarterfinals, leg pain briefly alarmed him again, but it did not cost him his place in the semifinals. According to available information, in Paris he has gone further than some of the biggest names in Czech men's tennis, including Ivan Lendl, managed to at a comparable age. idnes.cz ↗
In the semifinals, Menšík will face Alexander Zverev, who overcame early trouble to beat Spain's Rafael Jódar in three sets in the quarterfinals. The Czech player said his mental strength keeps improving and that he wants to give his best against Zverev. The Paris tournament thus continues with a clash between the experienced German favorite and a Czech player who has already significantly surpassed his previous career limits at Roland Garros. teraz.sk ↗
