Czech footballers take the field in Oviedo on Saturday for the third match of the current Nations League campaign. Against hosts Spain, the reigning world champions, the Czech national team will be led by coach Santi Denia, who will face a number of former colleagues and familiar faces in his home country. eurofotbal.cz ↗
Before the match, Denia refused to accept the role of outsider in advance. "It may sound like madness, but I believe we can win," said the 52-year-old coach. According to him, there is no reason why the Czech team could not succeed in Spain, even though betting companies give them only a very small chance. zpravy.aktualne.cz ↗
The coach comes from Albacete and, before taking over the Czech national team, spent fifteen years working with the Spanish under-21 national team. He ended that cooperation after the Olympic Games in Paris. During this period he worked alongside Luis de la Fuente and contributed to the development of a number of players in the current Spanish squad. El Mundo ↗
The press conference in Oviedo started about an hour late due to traffic and an accident on the motorway. Denia first greeted the journalists in Czech and then spoke about the expectations ahead of the match and about his relationship with the Spanish team. He said he wants to set aside the emotions connected with returning to his homeland during the game. isport.cz ↗
The match at the Carlos Tartiere stadium will be the Czech footballers' first away test in this Nations League campaign. The result may significantly affect their position in the group and the further development of the competition. irozhlas.cz ↗
