Bangkok Declares State of Disaster Over Widespread Flooding

Authorities in Bangkok declared a state of disaster on Saturday in all 50 districts of the Thai capital due to extensive flooding. Heavy rain has continued almost without pause since Thursday afternoon, and water has flooded several roads. ORF ↗

In some areas, nearly 300 millimetres of rain fell in about 48 hours. The flooded roads are severely disrupting traffic, and residents have been urged to stay at home. People living near waterways have been warned to prepare for a possible evacuation. BBC World ↗

The decision to declare a state of disaster was announced after water flooded large parts of the city. The state of emergency applies to the entire metropolis, including all of its districts. The authorities were responding to the effects of the torrential rain and the continuing rise in water levels. ANSA ↗

Residents have expressed concern that the flooding could be worse than in 2011, when floods claimed more than 500 lives. Current figures on the number of injured or evacuated people, or on the extent of material damage, have not yet been provided. Tagesspiegel ↗

The weather situation remains unfavourable, as rain reportedly continued on Saturday as well. The authorities are therefore continuing to monitor the flooded areas and assess the need for further rescue measures.
