Austria
What is happening there and why it matters.
So it makes sense
Austria is the nearest western neighbour for Slovakia and Czechia — the border sits just outside Bratislava, which is why topics such as the bridge over the Morava, cross-border commuting or energy prices concern both countries at once. It is a neutral state outside NATO, which gives it a different position in defence debates, and a country that for years was among the Union’s most dependent on Russian gas. The summer of 2026 there was about a record deployment of army helicopters against wildfires and about legionella in Linz.
- Who governs
- The federal chancellor is Christian Stocker. His government is pushing to extend compulsory military service to nine months and to ban social media for children under 14; in Brussels it is among the hard opponents of the proposed Union budget and demands the framework be cut by hundreds of billions of euros.
- Who opposes
- The strongest opposition force is the far-right FPÖ of Herbert Kickl. It is not invincible, though — in Graz the communists held on to power and the FPÖ finished only fourth. The party is weighed down by its own history: according to NSDAP records, in its early years it was led exclusively by former Nazis.
- Next election
- The next parliamentary election is expected in 2029.
